Our Dharma

The Dharma Room has its mission and purpose to help individuals find their own "dharma"...the fullest expression of peace, health, happiness and well-being.  In order to fulfill that mission, our team is committed to giving back to society in a variety of ways and we encourage you to consider doing the same.  Volunteering time and services to various organizations and special causes provides many physical, mental, and spiritual health benefits, including increasing self-esteem, lowering blood pressure, improving immunity among many others.  Not to mention the fact that volunteering improves our social help all while strengthening our communities.  Here's some of the projects that The Dharma Room is currently working with:

Integrative Healing and Recovery Yoga Classes

We are very happy to have partnered with the Therapeutic Healing Institute and Dr. Juliann Reiland-Smith in providing FREE Integrative Yoga Therapy classes each month for individuals who are learning to cope with a diagnosis of a life-threatening condition.  Individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer, cardiovascular disease, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis or other conditions are able to attend Integrative Yoga Therapy Classes for free along with their care-givers.  This class is a beautiful supplement to traditional and alternative treatments!

Please contact Jill Johnson at jill@thedharmaroom.com to pre-register or for more information.

Children's Inn

Children’s Inn was established in 1977 in response to a need in Sioux Falls for an emergency shelter for children and women who were victims of abuse and neglect.  The Dharma Room proudly supports Children's Inn throughout the year by hosting clothing and toy drives as well as providing its residents with gentle yoga classes to help reduce stress and empower them toward greater self-care and a sense of peace.

To learn more about how you can help Children's Inn, please contact one of the Dharma Room team members or log onto the website for more information:

Children's Home Society

Would you like to help our cause?  Donate your gently used yoga mats, yoga clothing or other items to The Dharma Room so that individuals from the Children's Inn may use them when taking classes.   Please see a Dharma Room team member for more information.

Yoga Philosophy Theme of the Week

Shaucha

We now begin to explore the five Niyamas, which are constructive tools for the inner work that gives rise to the ability to really put spirituality into practice in our daily lives.

Shaucha means "purification; cleanliness".  It includes a number of techniques for cleansing the body as well as the mind, and it has even been called the aim of the entire system of yoga.  The sages say that shaucha is not only the foundation for bodily health, it is also the doorway to deeper and more tranquil states of meditation.

Practice tip:  Select wisely from the many choices of food, emotions, and thoughts waiting to come into your body and mind.  As the body becomes purified you will experience radiant health;  as the mind becomes purified, you will feel increasingly clear, friendly and cheerful.
