All About Yoga

Do I have to be flexible? Will it conflict with my religion? Will I get a workout, or do you just sit there? These are all questions that you may be thinking if you haven't tried yoga before. Before you push away an experience that may be just what you're searching for, let me try to clear these myths up for you.

Do I have to be flexible?

It is a common misperception that you have to be flexible in order to participate in yoga.  On the contrary, that's why individuals are encouraged to attend yoga classes...to become flexible!  Flexibility is defined as having full range-of-motion in the joints of our bodies.  Without continued physical practice, we may lose that mobility and develop muscular imbalances that can have a dramatic affect on our health.  So there's no better time to start your yoga practice than today!

Will it conflict with my religion?

Yoga isn't a religion, but a holistic philosophy for healthier living, and it can help you become closer to your own spiritualty. By calming the mind we can get below the surface of our daily lives and discover who we are and embrace the inherent divine within us.

Will I get a workout, or do you just sit there?

Yoga is so deceiving in it's simplicity. The moves can look so calming and easy that it doesn't look like anything's happening! But whether you're in a class with beginners or continuing students, yoga can be as much of a workout as you want it to be. There are as many different styles and levels of yoga as there are instructors. Ranging from restorative classes to power classes, there's something for everyone. If you try a class and don't feel as if you're getting what you need, please talk to the instructor afterwards for recommendations of other classes or to get one-on-one instruction to help you take your practice to the next level.

Yoga Philosophy Theme of the Week

Shaucha

We now begin to explore the five Niyamas, which are constructive tools for the inner work that gives rise to the ability to really put spirituality into practice in our daily lives.

Shaucha means "purification; cleanliness".  It includes a number of techniques for cleansing the body as well as the mind, and it has even been called the aim of the entire system of yoga.  The sages say that shaucha is not only the foundation for bodily health, it is also the doorway to deeper and more tranquil states of meditation.

Practice tip:  Select wisely from the many choices of food, emotions, and thoughts waiting to come into your body and mind.  As the body becomes purified you will experience radiant health;  as the mind becomes purified, you will feel increasingly clear, friendly and cheerful.
